Topic Subject: | Installing RTR with RTW bought on Steam? |
posted 08 October 2008 02:06 EDT (US) Can somebody here help me intall RTR on a Steam purchased RTW? I bought the RTW Gold, the one with RTW, RTW BI and Alexander expansion. Here's what I have I done: I could'nt run the installer unless it found romeTW.exe, so I runned it in 'C:ProgramfilerSteamsteamappscommonrome total war gold'. A messaged said it could'nt find the 1.5 patch, but i runned it anyway. When I start up RTR a message pops up saying 'Failed to find Steam'. I thought the gold edion was pre-patched to 1.5/1.6 I have tried to run it from the shortcut both with Steam running and without. Does anyone know if it is possible to run mods on a Steam purchased version at all? And do I have to remove all RTW traces and download it again from Steam to try and install RTR once more, or can I just delete the RTRPE folder(this is the RTRPE v1.9(with modswitch))? posted 08 October 2008 04:33 EDT (US) 1 / 13 The gold edition should already be patched to 1.5/1.6. To find out start RTW and go to the options screen. The version number will be displayed in the top-right corner of the screen. If it doesn't say 1.5 yet patch the game first. I don't know if it's possible to run mods with the Steam version of the game. It works slightly different which might cause problems with mods. Using the Modswitch version like you did is most likely to work as it doesn't change any of the original files. Also be sure to enter the directory that contains the RomeTW.exe file as the installation path. You can use Windows's search function to find it. If you've used the modswitch version just deleting the RTRPE folder is enough to remove RTR. There's no need to re-install RTW. |
SubRosa Legionary | posted 08 October 2008 18:40 EDT (US) 2 / 13 You can run mods with Steam. The thing is you cannot use a regular shortcut to start the game. You have to do it through the Steam Launcher. Just add the command line switches you would normally put at the end of your shortcut into your Steam Launcher. There should be an option to 'add additional parameters' or something like that where you can add them. As far as RTW Gold goes, it may or may not be at 1.5. You need to start the game, go to Options, and see what version number is displayed in the corner of the screen. If you have Alexander then it probably is at 1.5, but the only way to know is to check. Amazon: Total War 2.3b Beta Release is now out! posted 13 October 2008 23:28 EDT (US) 3 / 13 Thanks for replying guys! @SubRosa: I've tried that now, and I can't make it work. What I did was this: I opened Steam, went to 'my games', clicked on the tab 'games', then 'add a non-Steam game to My Game list'. Then I selected a file named 'testapp', when I try to open it, a messaged pop's up, 'could not find steam'. @HussarKnight: I've checked the options screen, and it's patched to 1.5. I've reinstalled it and the same message comes up, could not find steam. How does this mod switch work? Do I have to start it up prior to launching RTR? And where can I find it? posted 14 October 2008 10:31 EDT (US) 4 / 13 The modswitch is a version that utilizes a function from RTW. This allows a modder to place only the files that he's changed in a specific folder. The game will use all files from this folder and get ones that aren't in there from the non-modified game. It allows one to leave the original files untouched while also taking up less harddiskspace. Have you tried using the command line switch like SubRosa? |

posted 14 October 2008 21:46 EDT (US) 6 / 13 There should be an option in your steam launcher where you pick the game to modify how it starts.Do you mean if I right click the gamefile in 'My Games' in 'Steam', and select properties? I then get a menu were I can change the target file, and where to start it from(I think). In my case it says; 'Target File': 'C:ProgramfilerSteamsteamappscommonrome total war goldRomeTW-BI.exe' 'Start In': C:ProgramfilerSteamsteamappscommonrome total war gold' Hope this helps, I miss this game alot. And would like to add, I am greatfull for your help. 'One can do without God, but not without religion.' 'Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.' posted 14 October 2008 22:47 EDT (US) 7 / 13 I believe that is it. Put the command line switches in 'Target File' line, exactly as you would with a regular shortcut. posted 16 October 2008 09:44 EDT (US) 8 / 13 Only problem is that it has to be an .exe file. Edit: I tried what you where suggesting, but it seems like there's no RTR .exe file beeing created. Only thing i can find that I can use is the RTRPE shortcut. I'm about to give up. Over at TWcenter I've found a couple of threads about the same problem, but no answers. I shall try a little bit more=) 'One can do without God, but not without religion.' 'Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.' posted 16 October 2008 22:57 EDT (US) 9 / 13 Your .exe file is RomeTW-BI.exe. All you have to do is add the -mod:rtrpe switch to the command line that steam is using (assuming that is what RTR uses). You ought to be able to edit it manually to add the text. So it looks like this: 'C:ProgramfilerSteamsteamappscommonrome total war goldRomeTW-BI.exe' -mod:rtrpe Amazon: Total War 2.3b Beta Release is now out! posted 17 October 2008 02:00 EDT (US) 10 / 13 No I'm sorry SubRosa, that didn't work either, I shall try and reinstall the whole game, and see if that works. That the RTRPE installer didn't find the correct version(1.5/1.6) somehow irritates me. Do you think it detect 1.6, while looking for 1.5 maybe? Edit: P.S. I found this one over at TWC, can you make anything out of it? I tried to make it run a .bat file named campaigne_map_reset.bat that comes with the RTRPE, but nothing happends. posted 17 October 2008 08:53 EDT (US) 11 / 13 That only deletes the file RTW reads the map from so it is re-generated with all the new info from the changed files. |
SubRosa Legionary | posted 18 October 2008 16:43 EDT (US) 12 / 13 At this point I am at a loss. I recall someone else who had steam being able to run mods by somehow modifying the command line in the steam launcher. As I do not have steam, I am not sure exactly how. Due to the limitations of the search function, I cannot find the topic about it. Amazon: Total War 2.3b Beta Release is now out! I've allready sent an e-mail to Steam Support, it's a long shot, but maybe they'll have somekind of sollution! 'One can do without God, but not without religion.'
